Writing Assignments for LAND 3230W

Assignment #1: Comparative Revolutions   Comparing and contrasting the sustainability revolution with another revolution or social movement.  ( 1 page, assigned  January 22) 

Assignment #2: Localizing Climate Change /Action   Developing  a concept for an event that the town of Mansfield will sponsor for the UConn CIMA week, to bring awareness of local implications of and potential actions in response to climate change.  (1 page, assigned  January 31)

Assignment #3:  Environmental Trailblazer Biography  Research on an important historical or contemporary figure who has made important contributions to our current understanding and goals for sustainable development.   (2 page, assigned February 7)

Assignment #4:  Sustainability Debate   Students will be assigned opposing or contrasting positions in a sustainable development debate, such as wind power or investing in rail transportation.  They will need to research the issue and construct an argument for their assigned position. (2 pages, assigned Feb. 19)

Assignment #5: Environmental Policy Analysis   Researching and describing an example of the application of a contemporary environmental policy, such as wetlands protection, form-based codes, or stormwater treatment regulations. (2 pages, assigned March 5)

Assignment #6  Sustainable Landscape Case Studies  Students will select and conduct case study research on one or more built examples of sustainable landscapes, analyzing themes, planning and design methods and outcomes measurement of their selected project(s).   (5 pages, assigned March 26)

Assignment #7  Sustainable Planning/Design Book Review  Literature search and selection of a seminal work on theory, methods, topics, case study in sustainable landscape/community planning and design.  (2 pages, assigned April 23)
